La Serena
The farm “La Rasa” is the property of the Matengoli family since 1933 and is located in the north-west part of the Brunello DOCG. Wine production began in 1988 and is bottled under the La Serena brand. It began modestly as a 1-hectare estate and has grown to 8.5 today. The estate is farmed with both organic and bio-dynamic techniques, it’s a diverse eco-system and the wine making is simple. Andrea and his brother are two of the most dedicated farmers I’ve met in Montalcino, they are working in a way that is similar to philosophies I’ve seen in Piedmont. Brunello is too much of a formula and it is refreshing to see the Matengoli brothers take this approach that starts in the vineyard and it shows in their wines. Paolo Caciorgna is in charge of winemaking at the estate and is in perfect sync with the Matengoli family, he’s renowned for making wine of place that reach deep in soils. The wine is aged in 20Hl sized, used barrels with about 5% to 10% aged in barrique. Total winery production: 29,000 bottles
